Welcome to Mpalane Fishing Lodge



Zulu translation: "Gathering place of the Impala."

Set on a plain overlooking the Pongola River as it enters Lake Jozini, this self catered lodge is situated 9km from the Pongola Game Reserve Leeukop Gate along a gravel road and can be reached by most sedan vehicles.

Situated within the Mpalane section of Pongola Game Reserve in Northern Zululand;  350km north of Durban and 450km south east of Johannesburg.  Mpalane is set on a plain overlooking the Pongola River as it enters the Pongolapoort Dam. Private boats are welcome and the camp has its own slipway and jetty.


Accommodating 24 people in 6 en-suite rondawels with air conditioning, and 6 en-suite bedrooms in the main building with air conditioning.  It has a lounge with DSTV, a fully equipped kitchen, bar area, swimming pool and boma with barbeque area.  Undercover parking is also available.




2 bundles of wood will be supplied per day at no charge.  Any further wood required can be bought at R20 per bundle. If you do not wish to purchase wood from us, you are welcome to bring your own.




Activities are subject to availability. Please enquire at the office. Appropriate attire is necessary. A
Minimum of 2 people required per activity. Activities on offer are:

·         Game Drives

·         Rhino Tracking

·         Guided Walks

·         Boat Cruises

·         Fishing Boat Hire


The rates for all activities on offer are as per the Activities List and Rates. All activities last approximately 3 hours, except fishing, and booking is essential. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before commencement of a booked activity will be paid in full.



1.     Account to be settled at Nkwazi lake Lodge on the morning of departure.

2.     Daily tariffs paid according to the days booked.

3.     Credit Cards: Only Visa and Master Cards.

4.     MTN, Vodacom and Cell-C reception.

5.     Malaria - Pongola Game Reserve falls within a low risk area.

6.     Please report any defects in the Lodge as soon as possible in order that they may be rectified for your convenience. 

7.     Speed limit on the Reserve is 30 km/h.

8.     Please do not harass the animals.

9.     Please leave the Lodge and equipment in the same good condition that you would expect to find it.

10.   Please do not remove any plants from the veld.







You are welcome to bring your own boats.

Please ask about the launching details for private boats.

These do change due to dam levels. 



From Durban:

Take the N2 North bypassing Empangeni and Mkuze. Continue approx. 44km on the N2 towards Pongola.

Turn left at the Pongola Game Reserve Leeukop Gate and follow the Mpalane/Nkwazi signs for 9 km.

From Johannesburg or Pretoria:

Travel to Ermelo, and follow signs to Piet Retief and Pongola.  From Pongola travel south on the N2 for 30 km, and 1km after crossing the Pongola River turn right at the Pongola Game Reserve Leeukop Gate and follow the Mpalane/Nkwazi signs.

Gate Hours: 06h00 – 18h00


Please take note when using the Leeukop Gate:

There is a train bridge you need to drive under, bridge size: height is 3.3m and width is 6.1m.

Pongola Game Reserve South gate / White Elephant gate can be used as an alternative. The southern gate has strict gate hours (06h00-18h00) and an entrance fee will be charged at R25 / vehicle and R25 / boat or trailer.

Please note that the Game Reserve’s internal access roads are gravel roads. These are well maintained and are suitable for normal clearance cars and bakkies, however they are not suitable for vehicles with very low clearance and low profile tyres.
